Postdoctoral Teaching Scholar in Public Relations

The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication within the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a 9-month (AY24-25 August-May) position as a Postdoctoral Teaching Scholar in Strategic Communication, with a Public Relations focus, beginning Fall 2024 (start date: 8/30/2024). This is a 100%-time appointment as a postdoctoral associate (Job Code 9546).
 
About the Position
At the University of Minnesota, postdoctoral associates are academic employees who conduct research, teach, or provide service that enhances career skills or allows for opportunities to learn new research or teaching techniques. They are trained by and work with a faculty mentor who collaboratively determines the training agenda. The goal of this position is to provide the candidate with advanced training in teaching courses in the School’s core curricula. Candidates will also have opportunities to join, learn from, and contribute to Hubbard's research labs and groups, e.g., the Research in Strategic Communication (RiSC) Lab, the Minnesota Computational Advertising Lab (MCAL). Candidates who have research trajectories that align with current faculty research is a plus. The identified mentor will also help the postdoctoral fellow position their teaching and research for future opportunities. 

Teaching Responsibility: 60%
Responsibilities include preparing courses, advising students, and teaching a minimum of four undergraduate courses in a 9-month appointment, which may include: Media in a Changing World, Principles of Strategic Communication, Public Relations Cases, Strategic Communication Campaigns, Corporate Social Responsibility Communication, Diversity and Media, and/or other key courses in the strategic communication curriculum. 

Research and professional development: 40%
The incumbent will also engage in training and research development activities, as determined in consultation with a faculty mentor. The postdoctoral associate will work with faculty to develop professional development and research activities associated with the unit’s emerging strategic communication institute, to be announced in September 2024. 

The salary range is $55,000-$65,000, and is based on education, professional experience in public relations, and teaching experience. Additional summer salary may be available over the following summer and depends on student enrollment, funding, department needs and teaching performance.

Required Qualifications:
+ All candidates must expect to earn a Ph.D. in Mass Communication or a related field (e.g., communication) by the appointment start-date (08/30/2024).
+ Expertise in public relations and evidence of excellence in teaching in higher education settings.

Preferred Qualifications:
+ Prior work experience in public relations or strategic communication professions. 
+ Prior teaching and research experience in public relations or strategic communication.
+ Demonstrated potential to teach courses in the existing undergraduate curricula, including: Media in a Changing World, Principles of Strategic Communication, Public Relations Cases, Strategic Communication Campaigns, Corporate Social Responsibility Communication, Diversity and Media, and/or other key courses in the strategic communication curriculum. 
+ A demonstrated commitment, knowledge, and skill in working with students to foster an environment of inclusion and belonging. 
+ Engagement with new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, in classroom teaching and the study of ethics in its use is a plus.

Teaching Assistant or Associate Professor of Strategic Communication

The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities seeks an outstanding faculty member, with a distinguished record of professional experience, to join our faculty in teaching the next generation of public relations and strategic communication professionals, training students to be advertising and creative brand strategists who can think critically, write clearly, tell stories visually and develop effective media strategy in a fast-paced world. Candidates should have demonstrated expertise as advertising and strategic communication professionals, and the ability to inspire a diverse student body. 

The professorship will hold a term, non-tenure-line, renewable position in the Hubbard School. It is a one- to three-year, renewable term, depending on experience and consistent with Hubbard contract guidelines. The appointment will begin on August 26, 2024.

As a full-time non-tenure track faculty member, the successful candidate will help students appreciate the role of ethical and responsible advertising, brand storytelling, and strategic communication across media. The School seeks someone to 1) teach basic to advanced digital advertising, campaigns and context courses in the School’s recently renovated digital labs, and 2) focus on building and strengthening partnerships between faculty and students with Twin Cities professional community and professional associations. 

Contract teaching professors are also expected to be actively engaged in regional, national or international professional communities, develop an understanding and participate in curriculum development and assessment relevant to their professional expertise, and participate in mentoring students for professional careers. Depending on the candidate’s experience and skills, the candidate may also contribute to new curricula or special projects courses in the area of social media, artificial intelligence and advertising/creative strategy. 

This position is benefit-eligible, renewable and carries the title of Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor depending on qualifications, including years of teaching and professional experience. The teaching load for contract teaching faculty positions is five courses per academic year. Additional summer employment may be available. Appointment at the rank of Teaching Associate Professor (non-tenure track) may be considered for a candidate with advanced teaching and professional experience. 

Job Responsibilities
75% Instruction and Course Preparation: The faculty member will teach 2-3 courses (6-9 credits) of undergraduate and courses per academic semester in the area of advertising and strategic communication, as well as some core context courses. The teaching faculty member is expected to prepare and deliver lectures, develop activities, prepare homework assignments, quizzes and exams, hold office hours, assess student work, supervise teaching assistants and manage the administration of the courses they are assigned to teach. 

25% Service and Professional Development: In addition, the person in this position will be involved in the continuing improvement of courses, the development of new curriculum for the school (if needed), the development and implementation of assessment activities, and will be engaged in appropriate school service activities including curriculum-related school committees. The faculty member will be expected to participate in University workshops related to teaching, classroom technology, diversity and inclusion, and other related topics. The faculty member also receives professional development support to maintain membership in relevant professional societies and participate in student and faculty professional and career development activities.

Teaching Specialist/Lecturer in Strategic Communication - Advertising

The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a full-time, nine-month annually renewable instructional position as a Teaching Specialist or Lecturer in strategic communication with a focus on advertising, creative strategy, and campaigns. Responsibilities will include teaching six courses a year (three in fall semester, three in spring semester) and continued contribution to the field of advertising, including professional development by broadening knowledge and expertise. 

Additional responsibilities include advising and mentoring students and service to the school and the university. The candidate will be expected to have the requisite professional experience required to teach strategic communication courses, including but not limited to: advertising strategy and creative development, digital content for brand communication, account planning, strategic brand communication planning, strategic communication campaigns, and the advertising portfolio projects course. Interest in and willingness to supervise internship experiences and/or support students’ career development is expected.  

The successful candidate will be someone who is passionate about training students to be strategic communicators who can think critically, write clearly and ask tough questions in a fast-paced world; who is both a creative thinker and strategist; who embraces innovation and is willing to embrace new methods and media. Applicants should have demonstrated interest and success in teaching others creative advertising design, writing, digital strategy and campaign execution skills. 

Appointment Details
This is a 100%-time, annually renewable position over the nine-month academic year (late-August to late-May). This position begins fall semester 2024 (08/26/2024). This is an academic professional position at the rank of teaching specialist or lecturer, consistent with University policy and depending on qualifications. Additional teaching opportunities during the summer term may be available.

Teaching and course preparation (75%)
+ Meet with appropriate faculty and gather information as needed to provide classroom teaching that supplements faculty offerings and expertise
+ Develop course content and syllabi
+ Prepare course materials, attend class meetings and deliver course content
+ Evaluate student performance and submit grading
+ Respond to student inquiries and meet with students
+ Teaching-related service and professional development (25%)
+ Attend and participate in student success committee meetings
+ Advise students with regard to academic concerns and school-related organizations
+ Support student professional development by maintaining currency on professional standards and knowledge of accreditation competencies relevant to teaching and learning
+ Participate in University workshops related to teaching, classroom technology, diversity and inclusion, and other related topics. 
+ Participate in committee service, advise the advertising club, course recruitment, participation in school initiatives, etc.
+ Maintain membership in relevant professional societies and participate in their professional and career development activities

Qualifications
Minimum required qualifications:  
+ B.A. in strategic communication, advertising, or closely related field will be considered for an appointment as a teaching specialist. Applicants with an MA or Ph.D. with an emphasis in strategic communication can be considered for the appointment of lecturer.
+ 3 or more years of related professional experience

Preferred Qualifications:
+ Five years of major-market regional or national experience in advertising or strategic brand communication, or equivalent experience
+ Experience teaching at the university level or training groups of professionals
+ Interest and/or ability to teach strategic communication skills that integrate multimedia elements such as text, video, audio, photo, graphics and/or data

Program Director for Backpack Student Agency & Teaching Faculty of Strategic Communication

The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota seeks an innovative, dedicated individual to serve as the full-time Program Director for the Backpack Student Agency and as a Teaching Faculty of Strategic Communication within its undergraduate program. This unique role combines leadership in student agency management with instructional responsibilities, with the aim to mold the next generation of communication professionals through experiential learning and classroom instruction.

Reporting Structure
This position reports directly to the Director of the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication, serving as a thought leader and primary liaison for external relations and strategic communication student experiences.
Job Responsibilities

The Program Director position and comprises the following responsibilities:
Backpack Program Director Educational Program Administration (40%)

+ Lead the operational oversight of the Backpack Student Agency, ensuring high-quality services and creative solutions for clients.
+ Facilitate the recruitment, training, and advising of students, focusing on professional skills, agency processes, and client interaction.
+ Create a positive agency work culture for student workers so they feel a sense of belonging and support in their professional development.
+ Negotiate and manage client contracts and student work assignments, ensuring a steady flow of projects and external sales.
+ Direct strategic planning, including setting agency goals, developing and managing budgets, aligning financial and personnel resources with project needs, and mapping out timelines for projects and initiatives.
+ Supervise account management and student workers, ensuring projects meet client expectations and agency standards, while also managing client expectations of work.
+ Plan and execute advisory board meetings, fostering strong relationships between the agency and industry professionals.
+ Champion diversity, equity and inclusion within the agency, creating an environment that supports multicultural initiatives and student development.

Classroom Instruction and Curriculum Supervision (30%)
+ Teach three strategic communication courses annually, spanning the academic year and including summer terms.
+ Engage in curriculum development and assessment, Ensure content remains relevant and reflective of industry standards.
+ Incorporate practical experiences and agency insights into classroom instruction, bridging theory with real-world application.

Teaching-related Service, Advising, and Professional Development (20%)
+ Advise students on academic and career paths, offering guidance on opportunities within strategic communication and related fields.
+ Encourage student participation in professional societies and industry events, facilitating networking and professional growth.
+ Maintain membership in relevant professional societies and participate in continuing professional development to expand professional knowledge and skills
+ Maintain currency on professional competencies and knowledge of accreditation standards relevant to teaching and learning; participate in university and school workshops and seminars on teaching effectiveness, classroom technology, and diversity and inclusion.
+ Participate in school committee service, school educational initiatives, and industry engagement events.

Client Contract Development and External Relations (10%)
+ Establish and set rates for internal and external sales in consultation with the Hubbard School fiscal and administrative team, facilitating all sales related activity, contracts and documents using academic expertise and institutional resources
+ Establish and maintain clear contracts with clients, outlining deliverables, timelines and invoicing procedures.
+ Identify and implement marketing strategies for the Backpack agency, enhancing visibility and attracting new clients.
+ Engage in outreach to industry professionals, media outlets and organizations to promote the agency and its services.
+ Oversee the development of promotional materials, including brochures, websites, press releases and presentations, in collaboration with the HSJMC communications manager.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications

+ Advanced degree in relevant field, and at least 6 years of experience. 
+ Demonstrated expertise in training or teaching strategic communication.

Preferred Qualifications
+ Executive leadership or managerial experience in strategic communication within the Twin Cities.
+ Experience in account planning, brand content management, digital marketing or advertising.
+ Knowledge of service contract negotiations within the advertising and creative services industry.
+ Experience in building multicultural teams and/or training diverse and inclusive student populations

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Journalism

The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication within the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a 9-month (AY24-25 August-May) position as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Journalism, with an appointment in the Minnesota Journalism Center, beginning Fall 2024 (start date: 8/26/2024). This is a 100%-time appointment as a postdoctoral associate (Job Code 9546).
 
About the Position
At the University of Minnesota, postdoctoral associates are academic employees who conduct research, teach, or provide service that enhances career skills or allows for opportunities to learn new research or teaching techniques. They are trained by and work with a faculty mentor who collaboratively determines the training agenda. The goal of this position is to provide the candidate with advanced training in research and engagement associated with the Minnesota Journalism Center. Candidates will also have opportunities to join, learn from, and contribute to the broader mission of the Minnesota Journalism Center. Candidates who have research trajectories that align with current faculty research is a plus. The identified mentor for this postdoctoral associate is Dr. Benjamin Toff, who will also help the postdoctoral fellow position their teaching and research for future opportunities. 

Participate in the design, implementation, and evaluation of research studies: 50%
+ The candidate will lead research development activities, as determined in consultation with a faculty mentor. Specifically the candidate will work on two projects: one studying the effectiveness of local news interventions designed to mitigate and reverse distrust and news avoidance among segments of the public and the second an ongoing study examining changes in the supply of information providers statewide. The postdoc will work with Dr. Benjamin Toff and other collaborators at the University of Minnesota’s Hubbard School and Minnesota Journalism Center.

Project management around data collection, engagement with local news organizations, and evaluation of data: 20%
+ The candidate will assist with managing engagement efforts working with local newsroom partners and aspects of data collection and analysis.

Collaborate on publication of findings: 20%
+ The candidate will work with colleagues on publishing research results for multiple outputs, including peer reviewed journals, white papers, or other public-facing communications that translate findings for a diverse range of audiences and stakeholders.

Professional development, teaching and training: 10%
+ Responsibilities include advising students, developing professional skills and training by attending professional development meetings. 

The salary range is $55,000-$65,000, and is based on education, social science research experience, and professional experience in journalism. Strong methodological skills is preferred, including experience and training in survey research and quantitative analysis using statistical software (e.g. SPSS, Stata, or R), facility with ArcGIS mapping tools, and/or experience and training in relevant qualitative methods, including qualitative interviewing and analysis.

Additional pay associated with training or teaching assignments may be available depending on student enrollment, funding, school needs and teaching performance.

Duration: This appointment may be renewable for an additional year, conditional on satisfactory performance and funding availability. 

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
+ All candidates must expect to earn a Ph.D. in Mass Communication or a related field (e.g., political science) by the appointment start-date (08/30/2024)
+ Expertise in journalism and evidence of excellence in conducting peer-reviewed research in higher education settings

Preferred Qualifications:
+ Prior work experience in journalism or media professions
+ Prior teaching and research experience in journalism
+ Demonstrated potential to conduct research
+ A demonstrated commitment, knowledge, and skill in working with students, faculty, and staff to foster an environment of inclusion and belonging 
+ Engagement with new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, in research and the study of ethics in its use is a plus
