Hearst Journalism Award
Professional Journalism track students are encouraged to participate in the 2006-2007 Hearst Journalism writing, photojournalism and broadcast news competitions. All entries must have been “published” or “broadcast” within the last year. Monthly scholarships will be awarded ranging from $500-2,000 to top entries. All finalists will compete in the National Championship Finals for additional scholarship awards ranging from $1,500-5,000. For more information visit The Hearst Foundation Web site.
IRE Watchdog Workshop

Sponsored by the Star Tribune, Saint Paul Pioneer Press and the Minnesota Journalism Center
IRE is combining its highly rated Better Watchdogs Workshop for reporters, editors, and producers with a special program for midlevel editors, called Unleashing the Watchdogs, presented in conjunction with the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
The Better Watchdogs track will offer practical nuts and bolts instruction for reporters, especially those at small- to medium-sized newsrooms and in bureaus of larger news organizations. The instructors will be experienced journalists and trainers from IRE.
The Unleashing the Watchdogs track will feature top editors who have years of experience in producing investigative and enterprise work. They share tips and techniques on how to get watchdog journalism done, especially from reporters covering beats and daily stories.
The workshops also cover the guiding of reporters in the effective use of the Internet, open-records laws, computer-assisted reporting and anonymous sources. Workshop Fee: (includes a one-year IRE membership): $60 professional, $30 student

AMERICAN MARKETING ASSOCIATION
The American Marketing Association is a non-profit, student-run organization that is officially affiliated with the National American Marketing Association as one of their collegiate chapters. We work with companies and individuals in the Twin Cities and surrounding communities to expose students to professionals and opportunities in marketing, advertising, public relations, and other related fields.

Luc Bondar is responsible for leading the global Loyalty Marketing team to design and implement powerful customer loyalty programs that recognize valuable customers and reward their loyal behavior. Luc joined Carlson Marketing in 1999 working in the UK and Australia, with a brief, two-year stint at Leo Burnett as Account Director. He successfully managed a portfolio of clients that included BATA, Toyota, Eurotunnel and Budget Rent-a-Car, as well as executing consulting assignments for Visa International, Woolworths and Westfield.

ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES
The First-Year Leadership Institute (FYLI)
FYLI is an 11 week-long program offered in the spring semester for first-year students designed to help these students enhance leadership skills, foster intrapersonal, interpersonal, ethical and moral development, as well as connect first-year students to the U of M and surrounding communities. Participants will attend weekly meetings, a weekend retreat, and will be paired with a senior student mentor. In addition, participants will work on Campus Engagement Projects throughout the program to make change for the better on a campus-related issue they care about. Princeton University Public and International Affairs Summer Institute
The PPIA Fellowship Program is designed to prepare college juniors or rising seniors from diverse backgrounds for graduate studies in public and/or international affairs and groom them for professional roles in public service. There is an array of opportunities under the Fellowship which span a period of development from the junior year of college to beyond the completion of a graduate degree. Spring 2008 Magazine Practicum: JOUR 4992
Many of you have asked for a Jour 4992 (practicum) related to magazines. We're happy to let you know that we'll be offering such a course in the spring of 2008. The class will place students in a variety of magazines from around the Twin Cities, where they'll work for 14 hours per week doing what typical interns do. The class will also meet once a week for a lecture and discussion about topics in magazine publishing. Most of those sessions will involve editors and writers from the participating magazines. Applications for this course will be available in late-October. The 4992 will count as a professional skills course. The experience will be well worth your while. Mark Pedelty to teach May Term Global Seminar in Mexico
Dr. Pedelty will teach JOUR 3991 Mexican Popular Culture in Mexico during May Term 2008. From public murals and mariachi music to artful films and romantic telenovelas, Mexican popular culture is known throughout the world. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides grants of up to $1,700 for undergraduate students either to carry out a project of the student's own design in close collaboration with a faculty sponsor or work with a faculty member on her/his scholarly or creative project. Over 5,000 students and faculty across the University have already discovered the benefits of these hands-on research opportunities in laboratories, studios, libraries, and field sites. Participating students have developed detailed knowledge of research methods while their faculty sponsors have gained the assistance of enthusiastic and capable students. Associated Press Internship Program
The Associated Press is offering a highly selective 12-week summer internship. The internship is an individually tailored training program for students who are interested in print, photojournalism, graphic design and multimedia journalists. The Politics and Journalism Semester
The Politics & Journalism Semester is a program of the Washington Center for Politics & Journalism. The Center brings 13 college student journalists, whose career goal is political reporting, to Washington each semester. The program is open to undergraduates, graduate students and recent (within one year) graduates; participants must be at least second-term juniors. Applicants must demonstrate substantial interest in political journalism as a career goal. Strong preference is given to those with reporting, writing and producing experience at school or other papers and broadcast outlets; published writing samples (from college or other publications) are essential for print-oriented students. Institute for Human Studies Internships in Journalism
IHS Print Journalism Internships provide a stipend, housing allowance, and travel allowance. Interns are placed at daily newspapers across the country and participate in an opening career building workshop. The internship offers real reporting assignments -- interns this summer averaged 30 clips. The deadline for early decision is November 1. For more information, please visit www.theihs.org/journalism.
IHS Broadcast Journalism internships offer hands-on paid internships at major media networks or news production houses. For more information, please visit www.TheIHS.org/broadcast. Production Internships are expanding to include placements in video game development in addition to feature film, documentaries, and animation. Spring placements are available in New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and other major media centers across the country. IHS considers applicants at all levels of experience -- from extensive camera work and training in Final Cut Pro to simply a general interest and desire to work in the film and media industry. 2008 Senate Internship Program
Looking for an opportunity to gain some real-life work experience? Intern at the Minnesota State Senate for the 2008 session. Senate interns receive a small stipend for their work. Internships begin in early January when the legislature goes into session and last until mid-May when the session ends. Applications can be found in 110 Murphy Hall, they are due no later than November 9.
Pulliam Journalism Fellowship
The 2008 Pulliam Journalism Fellowship is now accepting applications for next year’s program. Twenty winners nationwide will be chose for a 10-week internship which will run from June 9 through Aug. 15, 2008 in Indianapolis or Phoenix as reporters, photographers, graphic artists and page designers. Interested students should fill out an application found on www.indystar.com/pjf. The deadline to apply is November 15.
The Detroit News 2008 Summer Internships
The Detroit News offers 12-week summer internships to college journalism students who are juniors, seniors or recent college graduates. Internship opportunities are available for reporters, copy editors, photographers and graphic artists. The News offers hand-on experience and expects interns to assume a standard workload. Weekly training sessions on various newsroom topics are also provided. Pay is $541 a week. Applicants should have completed at least one prior internship or have had experience at student publications. Chips Quinn Scholars Program
The Chips Quinn Scholars Program offers training paid internship s and $1,600 awards to college students or recent graduates of color who are pursuing careers in daily newspaper journalism. College juniors, seniors or graduates within the past year with majors or career goals in newspapers are eligible. The program involves a 10-12 week long internship during Spring or Summer semesters. Philip Meyer Journalism Award
The National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting, a joint program of IRE and the Missouri School of Journalism; the Knight Chair in Journalism at Arizona State University; and IRE are proud to introduce the Philip Meyer Journalism Award, a contest to recognize the best journalism done using social science research methods. Three awards will be given annually - a first, second and third place - to recognize the best work using techniques that are part of precision journalism, computer-assisted reporting and social science research. The awards include cash prizes: $500 for first, $300 for second, and $200 for third. The Freedom Forum-NCAA Sports Journalism Scholarship Application 2007-08
The Freedom Forum, in cooperation with the NCAA, is seeking scholarship applications from college juniors with career goals in sports journalism, majors in journalism, or experience in campus sports journalism. Eight $3,000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2007-08 academic year to outstanding sports journalists. These awards are only available to current full-time juniors who will be completing their senior year in 2007-08. For more information and an application visit the NCAA website at www.ncaa.org.
