Applications for Major Status
Applications for major status are now available in 110 Murphy Hall. The deadline to apply is Friday, February 8, 2008. To apply, students must first attend a pre-major informational meeting. Meeting times are posted at the front counter in 110 Murphy.

New Majors
If you were admitted to the journalism major at the end of spring semester, stop by 110 Murphy Hall during the second week of spring semester to be assigned a faculty adviser. Make sure you bring your completed sample program plan and your student handbook with you.

SPH Public Service Announcement Contest
The University of Minnesota School of Public Health is sponsoring a filmmaking public service announcement contest in conjunction with its National Public Health Week Film Festival (April 7-11, 2008). Anyone is eligible and is encouraged to submit a 30-second public service announcement in any format (as long as it can become digital video) illustrating the public health message of their choice. Entrants have a chance to receive a $500 first-place prize and recognition on a global scale. Picture Power Now! Student Photography Invitational

Snap a photo of how you think power is represented visually and have your image displayed on screen at the Weisman. In addition, you will automatically have your name entered in a drawing for numerous prizes.

AAJA-MINNESOTA
Are you a student of Asian American descent, or interested in promoting Asian-American issues in the media, and seriously interested in pursuing a career in journalism?  Join AAJA for 2008 and help further your career!  The Asian American Journalists Association is a national group of professional journalists who are committed to increasing diversity in the news media.  $20 gets you a yearlong membership to AAJA through the local Minnesota chapter. AAJA-Minnesota gives out two scholarships and two internships each year, and last summer sent two student members to the National Convention in Miami to work on the student projects.

Hearst Journalism Award
Professional Journalism track students are encouraged to participate in the 2006-2007 Hearst Journalism writing, photojournalism and broadcast news competitions. All entries must have been “published” or “broadcast” within the last year. Monthly scholarships will be awarded ranging from $500-2,000 to top entries. All finalists will compete in the National Championship Finals for additional scholarship awards ranging from $1,500-5,000. Get paid for your research ideas!
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides grants of up to $1,700 for undergraduate students either to carry out a project of the student's own design in close collaboration with a faculty sponsor or work with a faculty member on her/his scholarly or creative project.  Over 5,000 students and faculty across the University have already discovered the benefits of these hands-on research opportunities in laboratories, studios, libraries, and field sites. Participating students have developed detailed knowledge of research methods while their faculty sponsors have gained the assistance of enthusiastic and capable students. Summer Research Opportunity Program in Michigan
SROP is an intensive summer program to expose talented undergraduates to professional and educational opportunities in the academy. The goal of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented students who pursue academic careers by enhancing their preparation for graduate study through intensive research experiences with faculty mentors. The major activity of the SROP is an in-depth research experience with students working one-on-one with faculty mentors. SROP students are required to write an abstract describing their projects and to present the results of their work at a campus symposium. Intercultural Leadership Retreat
The Intercultural Leadership Retreat is for international and U.S. students who want to learn to become more effective in international environments. This highly interactive, high-energy retreat becomes a living laboratory of what it takes to work with people from vastly different cultures. Study at another University through National Student Exchange
National Student Exchange (NSE) allows undergraduate students to study for up to one year at another school within the US, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands. Students have access to nearly 200 colleges and universities through NSE.  Tuition is usually equivalent to what the student currently pays to the University of Minnesota, and most financial aid packages apply. Credits earned through NSE will transfer back to the U of M. More information, including a list of participating NSE schools, is available at: http://www.offcampusstudy.umn.edu/nse/.  The NSE application deadline for the 2008/2009 school year is February 8, 2008.

Study Abroad in Germany through DAAD
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is pleased to announce the launch of a new summer internship program in Berlin for American journalism students. Scholarships will be awarded to up to 20 students enrolled in a school of journalism or majoring in a journalism-related field and have at least "advanced intermediate" German language skills to take part in this structured 11-week study/internship program in Germany.  For the first six weeks, participants will expand their academic understanding of the politics, society and culture of Germany, and the country's current social conditions and media scene. Participants will do a week of project work with journalism students from the Independent States of the former Soviet Union and subsequently embark on an intensive four-week internship with a German newspaper, magazine or radio station.  The application deadline is February 15, 2008.  To find out about eligibility and the application requirements, please visit: www.daad.org/?p=internxchange

Careers in Law Forum
This event will be held in the Coffman Memorial Union Great Hall on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at noon, break-out sessions begin at 2pm.  Come to this free event focused on all things law. From noon to 2 you can browse tables staffed by representatives of law schools and organizations that hire law-related positions. This is a great way to explore law schools or careers related to law. In addition to schools, participants include paralegal organizations, corrections, and law enforcement organizations. You can also gather information about law school tests, test prep centers, pre-law advising at the U of M, and the U of M Pre-Law Student Society.

Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition
The collegiate reporting competition awards nine aspiring journalists a 12-day guided study tour to Japan and South Korea, an area of special interest to Roy W. Howard. The competition, established in 1984 in cooperation with the Indiana University School of Journalism, honors the memory of the journalist who led Scripps Howard Newspapers from 1922-1953.  Deadline for entering the 2008 Roy W. Howard competition, open to collegiate journalists, is postmark Feb. 28, 2008. Click on 2008 rules and entry form for details. Winners will be announced March 17, and the trip will take place June 14-27, 2008.

Sunshine Week webcast explores government secrecy
 One of the features of Sunshine Week 2008 is a nationally webcast panel and discussion of freedom of information issues.  “Government Secrecy: Censoring Your Right to Know” will be satellite broadcast and webcast on Wednesday, March 19, Noon-1:30.  The Minnesota Coalition on Government Information (MnCOGI) will host a local site at the Minneapolis Telecommunications Network, 125 Main St SE in Minneapolis.  The MTN studios are in St. Anthony Main, just across the Mississippi from downtown Minneapolis.  Attendees are invited to stay after the webcast for a brief discussion of Minnesota access issues and a tour of the MTN facilities.  The webcast and discussion are free and open.  Reservations appreciated at mncogi@gmail.com.  Participants are welcome to pick up lunch at the local restaurants or brownbag.  For more information, visit www.mncogi.org.

The Health Careers Center will be hosting the “Step into Health Careers Fair” on February 6 from 10:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the Great Hall, Coffman Memorial Union. This fair showcases inter-professional, cross-cultural, research and clinical opportunities for students who are preparing to apply to a health professional program. SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Katherine E. Sullivan Scholarship for Study Abroad
Applications are now available for the 2008-09 Katherine E. Sullivan Scholarship for Study Abroad. This scholarship provides full or partial support for a fifth year of undergraduate study in another country for outstanding students from any campus of the University of Minnesota. It is intended to support credit-bearing and usually classroom-based study abroad that immerses the student in the host university as well as in the host culture, for a full academic year or equivalent.  One to three scholarships will be awarded for 2008-09. Eligibility requirements: currently enrolled U of M undergraduate with senior status (at least 90 credits completed) by the end of Fall 2007, including at least 30 credits earned in residence at the University of Minnesota (any campus); GPA of 3.5 or higher; U.S. citizen or permanent resident.  Further information and a printable application are available at http://cla.umn.edu/honors/sullivan.htm.  Application deadline: February 8, 2008.

2008 Student Scholarship presented by Minnesota SPJ
The Minnesota Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (MN SPJ) is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for its 2008 student scholarship. This year, MN SPJ will award two $1,500 scholarships to students pursuing a career in journalism. Applicants must either be enrolled in a post-secondary institution in Minnesota or be a Minnesota high school graduate enrolled in a post-secondary institution outside of Minnesota. Preference will be given to Society of Professional Journalists members. The deadline for application is February 15, 2008. Awards will be presented at MN SPJ’s annual Page One banquet in late May 2008.  Application forms can be found online at www.mnspj.org.

AAJA/S.I. Newhouse Foundation Scholarships
Awards of up to $5,000 each to college students pursuing careers in newspaper print journalism. While the scholarship is open to all students, AAJA especially encourages applicants from historically underrepresented Asian Pacific American groups. S.I Newhouse scholarship winners will be eligible for summer internships with a Newhouse publication. The application is available to download. Deadline is March 28, 2008.

Neilan B. Lund Scholarship
The American Indian Studies Department in association with the English Department and the School of Journalism & Mass Communication is pleased to announce a scholarship opportunity for an American Indian female student with a background and interest in literature, writing, and/or journalism. Students interested in applying for the scholarship should submit a transcript, a letter expressing interest in applying for the scholarship, and a two-page essay that describes: 1) their interests in writing, literature, and/or journalism, and 2) that explains how these coincide with their future career goals. Applications for the Neilan B. Lund Scholarship need to be submitted to the Department of American Indian Studies, Room 19 Scott Hall.  The deadline for submission is April 1, 2008.
