Welcome to the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota! Graduate study at Minnesota is designed to develop independent scholarship, originality, and competence in research.

Academic graduate degrees: The SJMC offers an academic M.A. degree in mass communication and a Ph.D. degree in mass communication. Both degrees are designed to develop independent scholarship, originality, and competence in research, and are intended to refine your intellectual skills and prepare you to conduct research, teach mass communication, or advance your professional communication career through the theoretical study of the field in which you work.

Professional graduate degrees: The SJMC also offers two professional M.A. degrees: in Health Journalism, offered jointly with the School of Public Health; and the M.A. degree in Professional Strategic Communication.

Minor in Mass Communication: Students seeking the M.A. or Ph.D. in other departments at the University of Minnesota may complete a minor in mass communication. Learn more about the minor program.
