SJMC donor Elizabeth Shippee and Chelsey Rosetter, the 2009-10 David Donhowe Shippee Memorial Scholarship recipient.
The 8,000 living alumni of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication are a vital part of our community. Since 1917, when the School began awarding the bachelor’s degree, more than 7,500 students have been awarded the B.A. in journalism. The school has awarded nearly 1,000 M.A. degrees since 1930, and almost 200 Ph.D. degrees since 1939.
Our graduates prepared to be leaders in the fields of professional journalism, strategic communication, and mass communication. Our alumni include luminaries in many fields, including newspapers, magazines, television, advertising, public relations, and higher education. The SJMC Alumni Society Board coordinates a number of programs to keep alumni connected to the School, including a popular undergraduate mentoring program and the Alumni Award for Excellence.
Get involved. Stay connected.
There are many ways you can get involved and stay connected with the SJMC and University.
Volunteer
- SJMC Mentor Program
The SJMC Alumni Society Board facilitates an annual program that helps students grow professionally by matching them with a mentor in their field of study. Together, mentoring pairs create individualized action plans that help students with career exploration, experiential learning, networking, and skill building. The time commitment is approximately two hours per month and is determined by the mentor and student during initial meetings. Contact the SJMC Alumni Society Board at sjmc@umn.edu if you are interested. Please include your graduation year, degree information and current job information and include "Volunteer Mentor Inquiry" in the subject line of your email.
