Greeting from the Director
Throughout its history, the mission of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota has been education, research and service. For almost 90 years, the School has trained students for careers in journalism, explored the role of mass communication in society, and expanded knowledge about mass communication through research.
The School has always believed that professional training and a liberal arts education are complementary. Thus, we prepare students for more than professional work alone: we prepare students to be leaders in mass communication fields and to be thoughtful, productive citizens in their communities and in public life generally. Since 1917, we have been not simply a repository of knowledge, but creators of knowledge.
As you browse our Web site, I invite you to read more about the past, present and future of the SJMC. We are proud of the School’s rich history and unparalleled tradition of excellence.
Albert Tims,
Director
